The Camargue

There was only one road to Port St Louis du Rhone and it was BUSY. At least we had a wide strip on the side and it was only about 20kms away, but we were so glad to get off it.
Would you believe it, just coming into the town centre and I saw a €20 in the gutter, nearly fell off in my haste to grab it ( it was blowing hard) and then I found another, and then a ten !
That's tonight's hotel paid for! This is where yachts arriving from the Med get their masts lowered so they can travel up through the European canals. That's the lock into the Rhone in the background
There's a bike path along the dyke up to the ferry crossing
But it's ruined by the stupid barriers
It's a massive waterway . And free crossings for bikes!
Bulls eye view ! Most towns in the south of France have a bull ring but it's not bull fighting like the Spanish. It's called a race and the contestants have to race in and grab a ring off the Bulls horn before taking a horn up the proverbial. This ones in Salin de Giraud by the ferry.
From here on there's only bikes and walkers. 40kms from one end of the trail to the other through some of the most pristine wetlands in Europe.
La Gacholle lighthouse. Still in action and also works as an information centre. There were lots more bird species but I love those Flamingoes. They live up to 50 years old and in 1960 were all but extinct in Europe. Careful protection of their habitat has seen them back in their thousands.
Now this would make our yachty friends cry. Washed up and abandoned , lying on its mast.
Booked in to this hotel at 3 pm . The wind was strong today and it wears you out. Horses and bulls tomorrow
