It's early Saturday morning and cyclists outnumber cars for a while. It's only 30kms to Pisa, it's flat, and there's a good tail wind. Life is good !
Tuscany is certainly an affluent area, modern homes, good rich farmland and lots of huge factory's, but if you want the old and charming Tuscany of the book/movie then you must climb hills. Like this one ,they were built for protection against raiders.
,I would recommend hiring a scooter if you want to see that side of Tuscany
Approaching Pisa ,we're on a cycle way running beside an aqueduct built by the Romans. Amazing Engineering !
Which brings us to arguably the worst piece of engineering ever... The leaning tower of Pisa.
'It's all in the footings you see '
( So how did they get the tree to grow on the same angle? )
One of us had to guard the bikes (this is where Lynn had her purse stolen )
So Christine won the toss and cued to go up it. From buying the tickets to staggering out the bottom door , one and a half hours !
I was just happy to sit in the shade against the cathedral doors and count the people going in (see me?)
I estimated that at €18 / head they were making about €20,000 a day. The moral of the story is if you're going to make a cock up, make it a BIG ONE
We decided to get a place for the night on the coast. Only about an hour away.
Approaching Lavorna we met up with these three bikers who took us right to the ferry terminal to buy our tickets for tomorrow.
I don't think there's been a day in Italy that someone hasn't shown us some special kindness. They've all helped make our Italy leg really wonderful ..
