"It is six o'clock , we will be arriving at 7 o'clock" By the time I got on deck we were just passing the island of Chataeu D'If
Built as a fortress to protect the French coast it was mostly used as a jail. Marseille is a very impressive port to enter with several other forts and huge cathederals
We were the first off , 7.12 my camera tells me.(just discovered it records the exact time and place the shot was taken!)
The first few Kms were the usual wharf mad scramble , busy, noisy. But the coast road to the west soon became quieter and very pretty .
That's Marseille looking back. Here's today's route
It was intriguing watching the council workers turning up for work as we sat and had our 'kick in the arse coffee' Down here they greet friends or work mates with a kiss on each cheek
( can't see that catching on in NZ )
We had to pass over a high range of hills as we left the coast and at the top was this tunnel. Luckily it had a footpath
La Rove marked the top of the hill and nearly at the bottom the huge salt water lake of Etang de Berre stretched out before us . Checked the map on the iPad again and saw we must go left around to Martigues.
