We have left the Doubs as it makes it's way north ,and we follow the Rhone du Rhine canal east to Mulhouse, almost onto the Rhine. This last 60 Km's is down hill as we are in the Rhone catchment now. That working barge is going Down a massive staircase of 13 big locks, followed by another 7 before Mulhouse ( pronounced moo-loose)
Apart from this and the 30 Km's into Chalon, we have been following rivers upstream. Against the prevailing wind too so if you're thinking of doing this French leg, "Yeh right I hear you say" go the opposite way
That paddock full of big caravans is a gypsy camp. About the tenth we've passed. Some are organized with tidy camps but most are disgusting and a real problem for the local government as their way of life is protected by the EU.
This part of France, the Alsace ,was once part of Germany and the house styles and place names are becoming more Germanic. A lovely region.
