Besancon is a large town and 65kms away so we're away before 8.30
This section follows the river Doubs and alternates between the river and the canal for both the boats and cyclists. It's a really pretty trail and goes through little villages tucked between the cliffs and the river. Before each canal section there is a weir that keeps the river deep enough for the boats and directs the water through the locks and in some cases, through a water mill. Wheat mills mostly.
As you can see by the roller blader, this is mostly a number 10 surface. We stopped for lunch today at this lake , just felt like a bowl of frites ( chips ) Its common to see big hay barns and usually cows as well ,right in the centre of a village. Gives the town a real cowshed smell !
Besancons an imposing city to come across by water ,with huge ramparts circling the old part.
